Wivenhoe Watching Wildlife - AutumnWatch presentation this coming Friday

A reminder that WWW is holding its AutumnWatch session from 1930 on Friday 6 October upstairs in Wivenhoe Sailing Club. It is free, and all are welcome, although please let me know if you intend to come so that we can ensure enough seats are set out. For those who are not Sailing Club members, you will need to sign an attendance sheet on your way in for licensing purposes.

The format this year will be a little different from previously: the evening will be almost exclusively devoted to 'User-generated Content'. We have had a great response to the summer photo competition, and we can do nothing better than let those images form the centrepiece of the evening: Wivenhoe's wildlife through the eyes of others, just as we hoped to encourage when we originally set up WWW five years ago. Come along to see and be inspired by the images, and perhaps learn how to take better photographs from the commentary. And be part of the public judging panel to select the overall winner from the five category winning entries.

Following from this, depending upon time, we will have one of our occasional 'Ask the naturalist' sessions, where we will attempt to answer any questions you might have for us. Please feel free to presubmit any questions, or just come armed with them on the night. This will be your last chance to get us all together in this way for a while, as we have decided that for at least one year, possibly more, we will not be organising these spring and autumn indoor events. It does take an inordinate amount of time to organise them, in the midst of our busy lives, so we need a rest. In addition, despite the valued regular attendance of many folk, numbers have been declining gradually, so maybe some time out would be good. Similarly, we will also be cutting down the number of outdoor events we organise. But never fear, we are all still around, and available to you through the Forum, by email, and indeed to chat to whenever we bump into you!

  • Thanks to everyone who came along to WWW AutumnWatch last night. Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! What a swansong...we finally think we 'got it right' after five years: a programme almost wholly generated by YOU, celebrating your images. All we had to do was to present them. The culmination of what our purpose was in forming WWW in 2012. Thanks for everyone's enthusiasm on the night, and indeed throughout the competition.

Particular thanks also to Wivenhoe Sailing Club, as always, for the use of their excellent facilities.

And finally congratulations to all the winners. After we have hopefully got their permissions, we will post the winning entries here on the Forum.
