Diseases of Sweet Chestnut

When you are out walking in Wivenhoe Woods, please look out for the fungal disease illustrated in this tweet, It is a serious problem of sweet chestnuts on the continent and has been found a couple of times in this country. With vigilance and early reporting and action, it is possible we can keep it at bay. Although not a native tree in these parts of Europe, sweet chestnut is now such a dominant tree in places (such as Wivenhoe Wood) that to lose the trees to such a disease would change the face of our woods completely.
