Looks like it might be up for sale:

Edit to add: parking aside, a decent central location for a Health Centre.

  • A nice old chap who I regularly used to meet and chat to over a drink ( his name was Johnny Turner - he had been mast headsman of the royal yacht Britannia and his uncle was the Captain) told me that Gothic House was once the home of our local doctor, Walter Radcliffe, whose other claim to fame  was designing the Wivenhoe One boat - and having a road named after him!
  • The Disposal of Gothic House is on the agenda [pdf, p.122] for CBC Cabinet, 14 June. The confidential part of the Cabinet report proposes to approve on the preferred bidder.

The capital recipt will go straight into the HRA Capital Programme. It's a shame that it couldn't be used directly to support people with housing needs in the local area.
  • Where is Gothic house??

Big old house, corner of Rebow Road, opposite Congregational Church.

It currently has a 'For Sale' sign outside it.

    Thanks.

  • its a scandal that places like this.... that could be a perfectly good home to several families/couples (I think there's at least 4 or maybe even 5 small studio or one bed apartments in that building) are being left empty like this. People are desperate for decent, affordable places to live and this building has been there doing nothing for nobody for months on end

It looks like a fire sale is going to be agreed for Gothic House.

On the agenda [pdf] for the CBC Cabinet meeting on 11 October is:

    Disposal of Gothic House, Wivenhoe

    Cabinet needs to:

"Approve the current offer detailed in the confidential report to this report for the freehold sale of Gothic House, Wivenhoe."

The public section of the report explains how three bids were received. These were then all withdrawn of July of this year.

    The report adds:

"Fenn Wrights advised the Council that there was an option to request an offer from the only other party who had expressed an interest but had not submitted an offer because of the level of the guide price."

The Cabinet recommendation is to now accept this price - details of which have been withheld from the public.

WTC has been keen for any money from the sale of Gothic House to remain supporting housing needs in Wivenhoe.
  • The agenda item was agreed by CBC Cabinet this evening, not without a further twist though.

A very, very late expression of interest came from Wivenhoe Town Council. CBC only received confirmation of this today. March 2017 was the official deadline for any bids to be made.

Cllr Scott appealed to Cabinet to consider the WTC proposal.

Adrian Pritchard, the CE of CBC made a rare interjection. He stated that if Cabinet rejected the report in front of them then the whole process would start again. Any other partner would also be able to make a bid.

Cabinet reluctantly accepted the proposed sale, expressing disappointment that the WTC interest had come in so late.
