Monsters in the Shipyard...

edited September 2013 in Wivenhoe Wildlife
Following from my postings about caterpillars in the Moths2013 thread, I was alerted this afternoon to these wonderful not-so-wee beasties feeding on ornamental Viburnum tinus in the Shipyard. They are nearly fully grown Privet Hawk-moth larvae, feeding upon an unusual (although not unknown) foodplant. In fact there was a third one, although that seemed to be very inactive, possibly on its way out or perhaps preparing itself for pupation.
