Fibre optic broadband in Wivenhoe?
  • Hello Everyone!

Firstly thanks for letting me into this cosy little forum - it suits your beautiful village very much!  I am on the verge of buying a house in your area, but I work from home and online, and its really necessary for me to know more about the broadband situation.

I have checked BT Infinity and the property which I would like to buy comes up as 17Mbps download speed (megabytes per second).  One of the reasons I chose Wivenhoe was because of the broadband situation.  I read on many websites (including an old post on this one) that fibre optic cable would be installed very soon.  In fact, openreach website says that Wivenhoe is already accepting orders for superfast broadband

But, the BT website seems to think that the address where I would like to move isn't hooked up yet.  (The address is in Upper Wivenhoe near the Horse and Groom).  Does anyone know more about the Fibre Optic Cable situation, and download/upload speeds in general, in Wivenhoe?  I would love to find out more info about these topics, and if the news is good, My family and I wont be hesitating in joining your lovely community!  If the news is bad, I may have to go for the other house which is on my shortlist in another riverside community in Sussex. It would be a shame, as I like the community feel in Wivenhoe.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.  Hope to meet you all soon :)

    Dave from Leigh.
  • I live in upper wivenhoe and work from home.

Standard BT line gives me 14mbps download and 1mbps upload.
  • Thanks for the info Mottza!  Its great to get some real data from real residents, and numbers are important.  Do BT offer any upgrade on that, or is it the fastest?

I can live with those kind of speeds for a few months perhaps.  Why do I hear rumours of Fibre optic cable in Wivenhoe on so many websites?  Are they true?  Does anyone know if the open reach guys are installing it soon?

    Thanks again guys!
  • Hi,

I live just down past co-op and have been keeping an eagle eye out for fibre optics (which they did delay a few months) but as of recently, my postcode comes up with speeds of 67.8mb downloads and 17mb uploads... so I would think they are still be working on rolling it out to the rest of Wivenhoe.
  • A search with a postcode for The Flag in Wivenhoe (top of Colchester Road) suggests that BT Infinity has yet to be rolled out.

I'm still averaging 10megs with BT from just past the Co-op.

  • Thanks for the updates!  So it sounds like it is definitely on the way - I am really happy to see that you already have it Lance.  That gives me hope that the rest of Wivenhoe will soon get it too.

I get exactly the same result for BT infinity at the Horse and Groom.  Which is fine for the moment - fast enough.  But I like the idea that my internet speed will be upgraded in the future, because of working online.

If anyone sees the openreach van driving around Wivenhoe, let me know :)  Ive just seen them go past the flat I am renting (in Leigh On Sea) and my BT infinity is now available.  Surely it can't be long now, eh?

    Eyes peeled!

  • I work from home 3 - 4 days a week. 10 megs is certainly sufficient - and that includes a lot of video / audio online work. I have a dongle back up in case of emergencies, but have yet had any need to use it with BT.
  • Cheers for the info Jason!  I use Skype about 8 hours a week day, and Saturday and Sunday mornings too.  I don't know how much Skype depends on the connection speed, and I'm not sure if fibre optics will make a great deal of difference, but I feel like I'd be mad to move into a house which wasn't going to get it soon.  I'm sure there will still be the odd connection problem, but I'd like as few as possible.

I have found out just trying random postcodes that Ernest Road has a whopping 80mbps download and 20 upload, and Stanley Road has 67 download and 17 up.  Sounds like its coming soon to a street near all of you...

    Enjoy!
  • I get ~50Mb down and ~15Mb up down by the Quay, that's with PlusNet on Fibre.
  • BT have installed the new Infinity Cabinets (the green boxes on the footpath) already, there are quite a few around Wivenhoe. Theres one by Vine Farm, one by the Co-op, one on Rectory Road. Also seen one in Elmstead Market too - its on its way people.
  • Great!  I'll be on my way too, as long as everything goes smoothly over the next few weeks.

Me and the family are looking forward to meeting you all!

    Dave
