trees at Ten Acres
  • There was some grumbling about trees being cut down on the Ten Acres site (nearly opposite the co-op).  The builders now want to cut down more, planning application number 120953, to give more light to the houses which are going up. Which trees could be felled was agreed as part of the original application.  Perhaps more have grown in the night. It is very difficult to judge the merits of the application as there are no photographs or information on the size of trees to be felled.  There are plans but my computer skills do not seem up to magnifying them on screen.
  • I believe they have noticed some deterioration in the condition of some trees so believing they are possibly now unsafe!!!
  • Grrr to planning applications in general. What is the deterioration they have noticed? Will they simply apply to build more structures once these trees have gone?

I used to love walking past the walled woodland of tenacres. Now that pleasure has been nicked - from us and future Wivenhovians.

Hope the suggested tree survey takes place so people can at least start to organise themselves to protect land and buildings that are special to them rather than just sitting back and letting it all disappear and having a good old moan about it on here (like me).

Oh dear. I am a hippy.
  • Is there a way to view which trees they are proposing to fell? I think if a planning app involved retaining trees, then they legally must apply to vary that app in order to fell them.

Poopdecker (or anyone else!): how do I see what is proposed? Does the Council Planning Dept have the same duty to put up notices locally / on their website to notify residents and inform them about what they propose, how to object etc?

    Thanks

    Rosie
  • All planning meetings are public so the latest info from it would be interesting. Local yap is that it is just a couple of trees to be felled but it's not just the loss of the trees but the loss of natural screening for the residents of the neighbouring properties. In my view any tree that is now felled should be replaced by the most mature tree available for planting.
  • I spoke to the neighbours on one side and they have been consulted by the developer. Some semi-mature trees are to be planted to replace some rather weedy and sickly ones.  They reckon these will be less likely to be cut down by people buying the new houses.
  • I am interested in Wivenhoe's trees but am not an expert on trees or tree protection orders so I may have got some of this wrong.

BigRosie, if you look at the application 120953, one of the background papers is labelled consultees.  A fairly large number of surrounding residents, plus Wivenhoe Council and three councillors were informed.

The Background Paper - Monitoring Report by the tree consultant Hayden's lists 7 trees to be felled, and parts of three others. Section 4 of this report lists the trees concerned and if you then look at the Drawing - Additional Works 2012, which is a plan of the site, you can locate the trees concerned.

On this plan you will see nearly all of the tree changes are on the northern part of the site, in the 'back gardens' of the houses being built there. Vaughn & Blyth in their application form state they wish to do this to 'improve the private amenity area to the proposed dwellings'.

Hayden says some replanting is to be carried out and this is shown on another Drawing, Proposed Soft Landscaping produced by Paul Baines a garden designer. There are three new Oak Trees in the major area of the tree felling (other new trees are shown elsewhere). I do not know if these were proposed originally (there are so many documents concerning the original application) or are a result of these new proposed changes. In any case there will be a further reduction in tree numbers on the Ten Acres site.

Poopdecker. On the plan, the trees to be felled are quite large and the 'replacements' don't look semi-mature to me. As I understand it the site is subject to a tree preservation order, so when the houses are sold the trees that are there cannot be lopped or cut down without planning permission.
