Tonight's Strange Brew on Radio Wivenhoe features fuzzy folk from Nick Drake, Roy Harper and Pentangle, mellow tunes from Mazzy Star and Buffy Sainte-Marie, the Cali sounds of Dillard and Clark and the Beach Boys, plus a little psychedelia from the Fleur de Lys and Brazil's tropicalia supergroup Os Mutantes. Taking us up to the present there'll also be songs by Angel Olsen, Jonathan Wilson and Espers, plus a featured album – the brand spanking new release by Melody's Echo Chamber.

It's starts mellow, then starts to swing, and sometimes takes a turn for the strange – just like a good Friday night.
There's a new show launching on the good ship radio Wivenhoe this Sunday evening from 7pm to 9pm.

It's called Sundays Down Memory Lane and is hosted by my old friend DJ Gilly... with a little help from me (making hot chocolate, organising fresh supplies of chocolate biscuits, and nattering with Gilly about the people, places and times past from 'the scene' in the area). The show will also feature some of the best of the area's current crop of musical talent and there will also be regular studio guests.

Gilly's style is eclectic, so one minute you might be listening to The Jam, then maybe some Modern English, then next he'll drop some Northern Soul on you. You'll just never know what is coming next and there promises to be something for everyone... unless the Top 40 is more your kind of thing in which case you'd better play safe and stick to Radio One.

So listen in on Sunday from 7pm, and every other Sunday thereafter, to the greatest weekend wind-down genre mash up on the Internet.

If you weren't listening to Radio Wivenhoe tonight then you missed an absolute gem... the station's amazingly talented young DJ, Rob Perfect, interviewing Colchester legend DJ Gilly about his 30 years on the local club scene. Not only did Gilly share some of his memories of the area's Jazz Funk & Soul, Dance and Disco scenes... and their key players and venues, he also brought along and played some of his favourite 'choons of 'All Time'.

For those of us who have spent most of our lives around the 'Sunny Colch' and Wivenhoe areas this was a fantastic trip down memory lane... if you have arrived in the 'Hoe in more recently times this was a marvelous insight into what used to make us tick in our local music scene.

Rob wants to have Gilly back on the show soon and I don't blame him... tonight they barely scratched the surface of Gilly's memories of 'Sunny Colch' in days gone by which include AC/DC at the ABC, Queen at Woods, Pink Floyd at... well I'll let Gilly tell you about that one and many, many more. DJ Gilly's return visit will be well worth a listen... and so is Rob Perfect's 'Demo Show' every Thursday night.

Another major step for Radio Wivenhoe this weekend with the first breakfast show being broadcast from the Business Centre. Mr Mule and Colin Hill will be co-hosing the show on Saturday morning from 8am. Music from the 60's to the 80's will be played. Expect chat as well...

This is quite a major move for the Voice of Colne. The aim of an FM community licence is still very much the focus. Broadcasting live at the weekends is another step towards showing the professionalism of the station.

Listening to Radio Wivenhoe is now incredibly easy.
Here's the latest mail out from the Radio Wivenhoe folk:

Its been some time since you joined our fan club and we haven't updated youwith the progresss of Radio Wivenhoe. We've tested out our internet connection have now got a new server which hasallowed us to add new features to the website www.RadioWivenhoe.co.uk. You can now listen with Windows Media Player, Quicktime, Real Player and WinAmp as well as direct from our website at www.RadioWivenhoe.co.uk.

From the website you can also see the songs that are currently playing, you cansearch for your favourite songs and vote on them. The highest votes are played within the hour. You can contact the Studio and add "Dedications and Requests" in real time. You are able to text us on 07758 323234, leave a message on 01206 808456, send us a message on Skype at RadioWivenhoe, email us at Studio@RadioWivenhoe.co.uk,or at www.RadioWivenhoe.co.uk. We are on Twitter and Facebook - RadioWivenhoe

On the hour we have the News Headlines and at midday and at 6pm we have an extended 5 minute News broadcast. Even more exciting is that we hope to be applying for a Community Radio Station License from OFCOM which would allow us to broadcast on FM and possibly on DAB.
Unfortunately they are not releasing licenses for this area until 2013 so we have a couple of years to "prove" ourselves and to create a management and financial structure to support this application.

Steve Ford, our local Labour councillor, has said that he would be supporting Radio Wivenhoe as it is a valuable medium for the community. We hope to be holding a meeting on June 7th at the Greyhound Pub to move Radio Wivenhoe forward. We are looking for people to help out with Admin, Finance,
and also to run programmes either Live or Recorded. YOU are invited to attend to meet up with us and to tell us what you want to hear, and even better, if you can help out in some way.

This is YOUR Community Radio Station - so come along and tell us what you want to hear. We can play music that WE like, but maybe thats not your taste - if you don't tell us we won't ever know what we should be playing. Our programme plans include a Classical programme run by DJ Geoff, Joe and Martin Newell have said that they will produce some programmes, we also hope that PoetryWivenhoe, the Wivenhoe Funny Farm and other groups will be taking part in this exciting venture. We have also been asked to broadcast an 80's programme (DJ Stuart may be persuaded to do this slot) as well as a Rock programme (Leigh could be up for this one!). Weekly, we are broadcasting a programme which plays all the number one's songs from 1960 to the present day, currently we are at 1962 - dont't miss this show on Sunday mornings and repeated during the week

In order to support this Radio Station we have added a donation link on our website, currently we are supporting this financially ourselves but we will depend on financial support from within Wivenhoe and its residents and businesses. It is costing us personally £50 per month to run the Radio Station, and that doesn't include the cost of PC's and all the other equipment such as Microphones, mixers and OB equipment etc. We are running this as a non proft making organisation, so any funds received go directly to running the station. If you can spare any support either in the form of time or money, no matter how small, we would really appreciate it.

We hope to be able to be at the Wivenhoe May Fair (WivStock) at the end of the month, if we can get a good enough WiFi signal, it will be live, if not, we will record some of it.

Please try and support us and we look forward to see you at the meeting. Please remember the 7th June at the Greyhound - we'll email and remind you nearer the date.

We really do need your help!

Immerse yourself in the medieval melodies of the City Waites, learn about the armour, weaponry and history of the City Watch, listen to the sound of the hog roasting or the woodman carving, the sound of people marching in the parade, the emotion of a Spanish ballad, discover local characters amongst the throngs, chuckle at the quality of the interviewing....all exclusively on Wonderful Radio Wivenhoe on Wed (28th) at 7pm, repeated on Sunday 2 Oct. at noon.

I'm on the look out for any local folk who would like to meet up and record a conversation for Wiv Chat, a show on Radio Wivenhoe that I am working on with other volunteers around the town. The format is very loose - we simply meet up somewhere, totally unrehearsed and record a conversation. It may be a historical chat, or perhaps a news based story. I've already got a hit list drawn up, and will be contacting folk as and when...

The plan is then to broadcast these recordings on a Sunday evening, with possible mid-week repeats as well. The beuaty of working with online audio is that they can be archived elsewhere, and packaged and re-purposed online. My first very, very charming guest was Peter Green, an 80 year-old gentleman who has lived in Wivenhoe all of his life. Five generations of the Green family were explored.

As explained on m'blog - this is in no way an attempt at serious R4 style broadcasting. As with most things that I do online, it is hit and mis and on the fly. Some things work, some things are not so successfull. Given the short time constraint that I allowed myself to devote to this project, I'm fairly happy with the outcome.

Please do contat me if you would like to be a guest, or if you have any suggestions - jason@radiowivenhoe.co.uk.

#WivChat with Peter Green on @RadioWivenhoe, part 1 (mp3)
#WivChat with Peter Green on @RadioWivenhoe, part 2 (mp3)
#WivChat with Peter Green on @RadioWivenhoe, part 3 (mp3)
